The Graven Tapestry of Radboud Castle is a unique multi-year project, where a tapestry is made in the medieval manner by volunteers. They have been specially trained in this traditional method of embroidery for this project.
On this day you will find the embroiderers themselves in the Knights' Hall with one or more of the tapestries. They will tell you more about the project, such as what specific medieval techniques were used. They will also demonstrate how they set the embroidery stitches.
In the Middle Ages, it was important for everyone to be able to see how long your family had been in power and who you were descended from. This was done with a so-called succession series. The Graven carpet is the succession series of the Counts of Holland, up to Floris V, the builder of the castle. The tapestry is embroidered by a group of volunteers, using authentic embroidery stitches and materials.
The design was created especially for Radboud Castle by historian Marius Bruijn, in the style, form and content of around 1300. More about this project and the designs can be found in the museum's Graves Room.
Textiles are fragile, so few Western European medieval tapestries have survived. The best known and one of the oldest is the Bayeux Tapestry. Radboud Castle wants to use the Grave Tapestry to restore the craft of these tapestries so that the tradition and methods are preserved for future generations.
